Position Summary

The Crossing Guard performs crossing guard duties by stopping vehicle traffic to allow children to safely cross streets.

 

This is a permanent part-time, non-benefitted position working approx. 15 hours per week during the regular school season. 

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: None 

Education and/or experience preferences: None 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Driver’s License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License      Required Endorsements: None  

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: No specific knowledge required 

Skills:  No specific skills required 

Abilities: Able to stand for an extended period of time. Able to hold up a stop sign for several minutes at a time. Able to walk and navigate street curbs.  

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Police sergeant and other crossing guards fostering a collaborative teamwork environment.  External: May interact with school officials, children and parents. Presents a friendly courteous image for the City to the general public.

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None -- Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions. 

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations) 

Essential Functions

  • Stops vehicle traffic by utilizing a stop sign and wearing a high visibility vest.
  • Directs children to ensure safety when crossing a street.

Physical characteristics: Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires normal vision; Grasping with hand, gripping; Working while standing for prolonged periods of time. 

Exposures: Working outside in inclement weather conditions.

Required personal protective equipment: Protective clothing -reflective vest.
