Position Summary

A Summer Camp Counselor, a/k/a Kamp Rio Counselor, confers with the Site Supervisor and other Counselors and develops daily activity lesson plans following the camp schedule guidelines.   Incumbent will teach and supervise children in Camp activities, and will assist the Site Supervisor with all aspects of the Camp program. 

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: Must have a High School diploma or GED 

Other requirements: Must be at least 18 years of age. 

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: none 

Education and/or experience preferences: Employment, school, church or civic activities where leadership skills of peers or others have been learned and practiced 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Driver’s License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License      Required Endorsements: none  

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: must have current First Aid and CPR certification 

Time given after hire/promotion to obtain certification or licenses: if not in possession of the above certifications, must obtain when the Department offers classes 

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: none 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Familiarity with social, recreational and sport activities that are typically enjoyed by youth 

Skills:  Customer service; social etiquette; diplomacy; flexibility and willingness to follow direction 

Abilities: set and maintain boundaries with children; follow through on a plan of activities; maintain composure and focus admit chaos; safety drive a vehicle loaded with children  

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Will interact   with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will   interact with facility patrons, providing direction, guidance, instruction   and enforcing rules and regulations. 

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None -- Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions. 

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations)

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Develops daily activity lesson plans following the camp schedule guidelines and confer with the Site Supervisor and other Counselors during the planning stages.
  • Teaches and supervises all children in Camp activities, and as otherwise assigned.
  • Assists Site Supervisor with all aspects of the Camp program, which may include, but not be limited to the following: care and upkeep of facility, equipment and supplies; participates in activity planning; supervises planned activities as needed; coordinates and distributes lunch and snack times; and assists in maintaining Camp records.
  • Acknowledges parents as they drop-off and pick-up their children. 

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily activity level: Primarily physical work on a continual basis 

Physical characteristics: Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires reading and comprehension of written materials; Job requires normal vision; Must be able to distinguish colors; Fine finger manipulation; Grasping with hand, gripping; Lifting/carrying/push/pull up to 40 lbs; involvement in verbal or physical confrontations; working while standing for prolonged periods of time; walking long distances; running while carrying materials/equipment/gear/tools; working more than 5 days per week; leading or participating in sports or recreational activities. 

Exposures: Exposure to biological agents, human/animal body fluids, blood borne pathogens, excrement or tuberculosis; exposure to sharp objects, including razor blades, teeth, finger/paw nails (including biting); Working outside in inclement weather conditions 

Extraordinary working conditions: none
