Position Title:Seasonal Junior Lifeguard

Reports to: Head Lifeguard / Pool Manager

Job Status: Temporary/Seasonal  

Full Time Equivalent: 0.08  


Position Summary

Performs junior lifeguarding and instructional aid duties. Acts as attendant for slide/diving board usage. Assists in facility maintenance and cleanliness. 

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: Must have completed the 8th grade of school

Other requirements:  Must be at least 14 years of age. 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Driver’s License requirement: None      Required Endorsements: None  

Note -- For any driver, driving record must always meet City driving and insurability standards.

Required certifications, licenses or registrations: Must be able to complete the following Jeff Ellis & Assoc. courses: Junior Lifeguard Program (through the City of Rio Rancho) or Learn to Swim Instructor Aid, CPR and First Aid. Must be able to swim at least 500 yards and, as part of this position, will be tested every two weeks.  

Preferred certifications, licenses or registrations: None 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Must have a mature approach when dealing with patrons and co-workers. Must become knowledgeable about all aquatics programs so that questions asked by the public can be answered accurately. 

Skills:  Must have excellent public relations and customer service skills.    

Abilities: Able to swim at least 500 yards 

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Will interact   with other City staff, taking direction and providing information; will   interact with facility patrons and swimmers, providing direction, guidance,   instruction and enforcing rules and regulations. 

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None -- Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions. 

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations) 

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Assists in pool area, grounds maintenance and cleanliness.
  • Attends all training sessions and in-service trainings.
  • Works in cooperation with the Head Lifeguard and Pool Manager.
  • Slide/diving board attendant.
  • Monitors flow of slide and diving board usage and safety heights.  

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily activity level: Blend of sedentary and physical work 

Physical characteristics: While performing the essential functions of this job, some tasks involve the ability to exert very moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of sitting, standing, walking and/or swimming. Emergency tasks and training involve the performance of physically demanding work, which may involve some combination of running, climbing or swimming, and may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy and/or heavy objects, materials and/or persons. Frequently required to sit, kneel, stand, stop, communicate, reach and manipulate swimmers; walk or rove around the pool. Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires reading and comprehension of written materials; Job requires normal vision; Must be able to distinguish colors; Must be able to see in dim light; Grasping with hand, gripping; Use of medical equipment (i.e. AED, give injections, bandage/splint); Lifting/carrying/push/pull up to 49 lbs.; Working while standing for prolonged periods of time; Running while carrying materials/equipment/gear/tools; Swimming/ lifeguarding activities; Working more than 8 hours/day. Requires frequent   use of sensory activities such as talking, seeing, hearing, smelling, feeling   and depth perception to help with the recognition and identification of   swimmers in distress or unsafe behaviors.   Required to wear City of Rio Rancho uniforms, swimsuits and use   provided safety equipment.   

Exposures: Exposure to biological agents, human/animal body fluids, blood pathogen, excrement or tuberculosis; Working outside in inclement weather conditions.  

Extraordinary working conditions: May work in an outside environment that is subject to quick changes in environment, including rain, thunder/lightening, and hail.   Bare feet; slippery surfaces; possible exposures to blood-borne pathogens 

Hazardous equipment/machinery used: Ladders; diving boards  

Required personal protective equipment: Must keep   lifesaving gear closely available at all times when guarding the pool area .  Safety Glasses; Safety Goggles/chemical splash goggles; Face shield; Breathing mask; Latex gloves; Rubber gloves; Chemical resistant gloves
