Position Summary

The Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Intern is responsible for GIS data creation, data gathering, quality control, quality assurance, etc. for the City of Rio Rancho’s GIS program.  

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education:  One year of college coursework in GIS or Geography 

            For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study: n/a 

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: none  

Education and/or experience preferences: none 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Driver’s License requirement: Infrequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License      Required Endorsements: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Knowledge of geographic information systems, specifically ESRI ArcGIS 10 Desktop software  

Skills:  Must be able to successfully produce documents/spreadsheets, communicate via e-mail, or perform data entry as necessary to accomplish the essential functions of the position. Use of technology, equipment and software typically used in the office environment. Skills in reading and interpreting engineering plans or reports, technical engineering specifications, standards, methods and procedures. 

Abilities: Ability to create and edit GIS data; ability to geo-reference files into GIS; ability to work independently with provided direction; ability to pay attention to detail  

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: This position works with project and GIS   technical staff on various assignments either detailed within the City’s   Strategic Plan or on an as needed basis.   This position will also work with other staff members with varying   degrees of GIS knowledge. This   position must maintain harmonious, courteous, and understanding   relationships, while fostering a collaborative teamwork environment. External: This position works with   contractors, vendors, individual citizens, other government agencies, and the   general public on planning City infrastructure projects. The position presents a friendly, courteous   image for the City to the general public, customers, and public officials. 

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Moderate--incumbent is expected to analyze situations that are not covered by established procedures or instructions and suggest to supervisor a recommended course of action 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: Low -- Position is accountable to a Department Director or Division Manager and cannot make major decisions or obligate the City 

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations) 

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Creates and/or updates GIS data including digitizing data from static documents and aerial imagery  
  • Interprets plats and engineering plans
  • Gathers needed data, either in the field or in the office, to support City GIS functions
  • Performs Quality Control/Quality Assurance checks on GIS data

Physical characteristics: Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires reading and comprehension of written materials; Job requires normal vision; Must be able to distinguish colors; Grasping with hand, gripping; Keystroking or repetitive motion of hands/fingers/arms; Work activities produce impact on hand, wrist, forearm, elbow from vibration; Lifting/carrying/push/pull up to 49 lbs.
