Position Summary

The Custodian-I performs janitorial duties in City buildings, warehouses and offices to maintain clean, orderly and safe conditions and performs routine repairs as required. 

Education, Training and Experience minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: High School Graduate or equivalent 

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Six months experience in janitorial or custodial work.    

Education and/or experience preferences: Specialized experience in operating heavy-duty floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment. 

Certifications, Licenses and Registrations

Drivers License requirement: Frequent Driver -- Regular Driver's License      Required Endorsements: None

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Basic cleaning methods, materials, and equipment.  

Skills:  Operating heavy-duty floor scrubbing and carpet shampooing equipment. 

Abilities: Learn how to operate and maintain cleaning equipment, use cleaning chemical solutions, and perform routine maintenance on plumbing, lighting, and heating equipment. Learn and adhere to safety procedures, OSHA regulations, and Employee Right to Know Act. Comprehend and carry out simple verbal instructions and recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.  

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Works with other custodians and maintenance   staff to maintain offices, warehouses, and grounds. Has daily interaction with employees at   on-site facilities.   External: General public, customers, and public   officials.  

Authorities and Accountabilities

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None -- Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions. 

Span of control: Responsibility for own work (no supervision or leadership expectations) 

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Performs janitorial duties in City buildings, warehouses, and offices to maintain clean, orderly and safe conditions adhering to safety procedures at all times. Tasks include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleans and sanitizes restroom facilities; to include cabinets, tile areas, dispensers, waste baskets, toilet bowls, urinals, lavatories, stall partitions, doors, mirrors, windows and trim.
  • Cleans, dusts, sweeps, vacuums and waxes offices, to include floors, desks, furniture, book cases, filing cabinets, ashtrays, waste baskets, switches, walls, partitions, and doors.
  • Cleans water fountains, sinks, and kitchens, to include furniture, sinks, counters, food and preparation areas.
  • Cleans air discharge and return grills and disposes of trash.
  • Locks and unlocks all areas in which work is performed.
  • Cleans outside areas and common areas as required.
  • Assists with room set-up for meetings and special events.
  • Changes light bulbs.
  • Monitors utilization of janitorial supplies and alerts supervisor when reordering required.
  • Notifies the supervisor concerning need for major repairs or additions to lighting, heating, and ventilating equipment and systems.  

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Daily activity level: Primarily physical work on a continual basis 

Physical characteristics: Job requires oral and aural communication; Job requires reading and comprehension of written materials; Job requires normal vision; Must be able to distinguish colors; Must be able to see in dim light; Exposure to high noise levels; Grasping with hand, gripping; Keystroking or repetitive motion of hands/fingers/arms; Work activities produce impact on hand, wrist, forearm, elbow from vibration; Operation of gas-powered machines or equipment; Climbing Ladders; Bending/kneeling/crawling; Lifting/carrying/push/pull of 50 lbs.; Walking long distances; Shift work, including mid and grave; Working more than 8 hours/day; Working more than 5 days a week; Job involves driving most of the shift  

Exposures: Exposure to biological agents, human/animal body fluids, blood borne pathogens, excrement or tuberculosis; Handling hazardous chemicals or toxic substances; Exposure to excessive amounts of dust, flying particles, toxic vapors, noxious fumes or mists; Exposure to vibrations from equipment or operations; Exposure to sharp objects including razor blades, teeth, finger/paw nails (incl. biting); Working with extremely hot or cold objects; Falling objects could injure feet; Working outside in inclement weather conditions
