Position Summary

The Librarian-I is responsible for providing basic professional reference assistance. Develops, maintains and market library collection of books and other materials; assists library users in locating, obtaining, and using information and other materials, both in the library and remotely, and participates in planning and delivering programs for the library's users.

A Librarian-I is distinguished from a Librarian-II by the Librarian–II’s requirement of a Master’s Degree in Library Science. 

Education, Training and Experience – minimum required to proficiently perform the job

Education / higher education: Bachelor's Degree 

           For required college degrees, applicable field(s) of study:  History or any related field, Anthropology, Communication or any related field, Literature or any related field, English or any related field, Linguistics, Philosophy, Sociology or any related field, Education or any related field, Instructional Technology and Training or any related field, Fine Arts or any related field, any STEM field. 

Minimum number of years of directly related experience: Two years experience working in a library setting or experience with any combination of similar experience in program development, event planning, teaching, inventory selection or management, book store experience, or technical customer service experience in any industry. A Master's Degree in Library Science may be substituted for all required education and experience. Education and/or experience preferences: Public library experience preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required to proficiently perform the job

Knowledge: Basic principles and procedures of professional library work, including methods, practices, and techniques of library classification, cataloging, and references, collections, systems and online applications; Computerized cataloging, bibliographical, and circulation system databases; and basic reference tools and services; Standard bibliographic sources, the on-line cataloging databases, Materials and services available in public libraries; Professional library publications and the literature of librarianship. 

Skills:     Use of technology, equipment and software program applications. Operate standard office equipment.

Abilities: Communicate with, and respond pleasantly to, a demanding and diverse public; Work well with children, teen, and adult patrons; Remain calm and efficient under pressure at the public service desk; Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing; a Develop, schedule, and conduct training to meet current customer needs. Assess and prioritize multiple tasks, projects and demands; communicate effectively in verbal and written form.  

Interaction with Groups/Agencies/Entities: Internal: Establish and maintain effective working relations with co-workers and customers. Work with library staff on special projects and promotions. External:   Assists library customers in person and remotely to locate requested information or use library resources in print, in other formats, and online.

Level of independent decision making: Minimal-incumbent primarily carries-out instructions and follows established procedures 

Budgetary/Financial/Asset accountability: None -- Position has no accountability for, or authority to make, budgetary or financial decisions.

Essential Functions

The following functions are typical for this position. The omission of specific functions does not exclude them if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment for this position. Other duties may be required and assigned.

  • Provides general reference assistance, user instruction, and readers’ advisory service to patrons, conducts reference interviews to determine patron needs and instructs and guides patrons in locating, selecting, and using books, periodicals, and other print and non-print materials; instructs patrons in use of print, online, and other library resources; researches and requests inter-library loans; places holds on materials, and selects and pulls materials for patrons, as requested.
  • Performs original, contributed, and copy cataloging (physical or electronic) for library materials in all formats and supervises preparation of received materials.
  • Evaluates, selects, orders, and weeds materials to maintain effective and timely library collections in line with the library’s collection development plan and budget guidelines.   Participates in selection of both book and non-book collection materials.
  • Plans, organizes, publicizes and implements library educational or other special projects and programs within assigned areas (e.g., children’s story time); may also develop materials and/or serve as instructor for designated projects and programs; participates in developing, designing and setting up exhibits and displays.   Assist in the development, implementation, and evaluation of programs and services in such areas as children’s services, adult services, and community outreach.
  • Contributes to the marketing of the library collections by giving library tours: developing and maintaining displays, bibliographies, and library user guides, both print and electronic.
  • Records service statistics, answers correspondence and telephone calls, develops procedures as needed, and contributes to the development and revision of library planning documents, including budget items.
  • Keep abreast of professional developments and current events; read journals, review books, bibliographies, and other media and participate in applicable educational opportunities.
  • Serves on library committees as assigned.
  • May be scheduled/required to work nights and weekends.
